Ok so overall, I was so stressed out and worried before but it ended up being such an easy process! First with the SAS desk in Chicago, I checked a bag so when I went to the airline desk and the SAS agent asked me for my passport. When she saw I was American, she asked what other documentation I had and I then pulled out my massive binder but all she wanted from me was the 1. copy of swedish passport 2. Personbevis 3. Letter my partner wrote exlaining the exemption. She then took them to this back room to verify and came back and said "Here you go! You’re all set, here’s your boarding pass and your bag will be checked all the way to Stockholm.” She then said I’ll just have to show the documents again at the gate when boarding. When I boarded, I showed them to another agent and he just glanced at my binder and saw the copy of the Swedish passport and said “Oh I can tell you have all the documentation, enjoy your flight!” They were all so nice and helpful and did not question the exemption. Note I only said he was my partner - I did not have to show any evidence of cohabiation or engagement or anything like that.
Then at Copenhagen I was kinda anxious about going through the passport control line, but then when I stepped up and gave the lady my passport, she simply asked “Are you going to Sweden?” When I said yes she was like ok! and stamped the passport. Only took 15 seconds. Then in Sweden you just walk right though - no passport/border control at all!
I highly recommend SAS!! I understand it comes down to the agents you meet, but they clearly seemed to respect the exemption for partners. Also I was sick to my stomach before because I was anxious, but it actually was a very simple process with SAS. Just be confident when talking to agents and come prepared!
